Beverly Valdez

ARTIST BIO

Trinidad born, Beverly Valdez is an emerging artist whose work is strongly influenced by her Caribbean heritage. Beverly has a strong creative background. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Fine Arts degree from Howard University and more than 25 years experience as a Graphic Design Manager and Creative Director in the design and communications field, she began painting as a full-time artist in 2018. Beverly has exhibited her work in several group shows in the United States, and she recently exhibited her work in a solo show in Trinidad. Her paintings are to be found in collections in the USA and the Caribbean.

The color, energy, and vibrancy of Trinidad’s Carnival have been a constant source of stimulus for Beverly’s work. Her greatest inspiration, however, is derived from her love of the Caribbean, with its rich culture, dramatic coastlines, and colonial architecture. Her work reflects the pulsating energy and color that define Caribbean culture, geography, and landscape. Beverly works in acrylics, watercolor, and mixed media on paper, canvas, and wood.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Strongly influenced by my Caribbean heritage, my paintings are abstract interpretations and recollections of my Caribbean experiences. They are inspired by the colors, history, culture, architecture and vibrancy of the celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago. I begin a painting with an idea of the direction I want to take. Each painting then evolves and changes as I work. The process is organic. My memories of Trinidad and Tobago are saturated with color and I transform them into bold expressive visual statements.
